Purbeck Railway Circle January Meeting

Our next meeting is on Friday 10th January, when Jim Boudreau will deliver a presentation entitled "Maids of All Work: The SR Moguls”.

From the first patent for a Pony or Bissell truck the talk will outline how from somewhat indifferent beginnings the British 2-6-0 developed into a versatile true mixed traffic engine. Combining a very wide route availability and capable of heavier loads and higher speeds than the more numerous 0-6-0s the 2-6-0 eventually became a very useful addition to all the big four companies locomotive fleets. Although the 4-6-0 superseded the 'Mogul' in the Type 5 category construction of 2-6-0s continued almost to the end of the 1960s. The convoluted development of the SR Mogul fleet will highlight the general problem of correctly identifying the Officers that were really responsible for the design work. Finally there will be a selection of pictures of 2-6-0s that survived into preservation.

The Circle meets in Harmans Cross Village Hall, Haycrafts Lane, Harmans Cross at 7.00 for 7.30 pm. Tea/coffee/biscuits and a Railway orientated raffle will be provided as usual
